A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The president announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
